Yeah!!! Be quiet and shut the f*ck up because anyone who disagrees with the sociological hegemony is a racist and doesn't deserve to be heard. And in regards to the lengthy rant above, many of the idiosyncrasies of the job market have been discussed on this board - why is it unacceptable to discuss one factor that is a bit more systematic and is of great sociological interest? It's so sad that mainstream sociology still frames issues of race/ethnicity based solely on theories from the 1950s and take people like Joe Feagin seriously.

Aren't we supposed to be watching the Olympics? I do believe we were directed to do so in an earlier post. This topic is going nowhere.

Just my two cents: I have 4 solo-authored pubs (with another solo-authored R&R in the top journal in my subdiscipline), a book under review at a top academic press, and I'm getting my PhD from a top-30 school. I also have a bunch of teaching experience (5 semesters as a TA; 3 solo-taught courses). I applied to tons of places within all "levels" and I haven't even gotten one interview. So I don't think it's as simple as plugging all of our qualifications into a formula and producing a result.

Linda...that is amazing that you have that many sole-authored pubs and no interviews yet. I guess it just goes to show how unpredictable this stuff is. You will get something eventually though if you are that productive. Good luck!

I would rate myself a B; I have 3 peer reviewed pubs + an r & r (1 first authored, 1 sole authored), some decent teaching experience (2 semesters as a TA, 3 teaching gigs), and am at a top 10 university, and so far I've had 2 (assistant prof) interviews but no offers as of yet, and I'm a finalist for a postdoc.
I specialize in quant methods and one of my TAships was for stats, and both interviews were for schools looking for someone to teach stats, so I think that made a huge difference in getting the interviews.

And I think you are severely underestimating how bad the market is this year. A-listers will probably get all the r1-r2, and SLAC jobs. Many B-listers will get nothing. Depending on sub specialty, A listers will get nothing either. Several specialties that were hot 5 years ago have almost no positions open this year (culture, economic sociology, qualitative, social psych). I also think so.
