Have many people heard back from Pacific Lutheran or Iona? I saw that 1 person noted they've heard from PLU, but I was wondering if others have? If you don't hear from a job you express interest in is it still worth applying or do you think they'll discard your application as quickly as your interview request? Thanks

I haven't heard back from PLU - or Grinnell. I sent messages to both of them just in the last 48 hours, though. I wouldn't take any particular meaning from not hearing back from any school now - in general, the process seems extremely disorganized. (I am pretty sure there are some schools who have submitted their jobs to the employment services, or at least think they have, and those jobs aren't even listed yet.) Bottom line is that the employment service is likely even less important this year than usual.
On the other hand, if we're competing for jobs ... yes, not hearing back at this stage is a definite sign that you should throw in the towel and not bother to apply. ;-)

Iona's search committee person emailed my department liasion a few days ago, asking that people potentially interested in the job email her directly to schedule an ASA meeting (as opposed to the employment service? for which they currently registered??). Even though I am/would be interested in the job, given the location especially, it turns me off that they - while requesting direct contact - aren't responding to people who signed up for the service for which they are also registered. (I requested an interview two weeks ago through it and haven't heard anything, like everyone else.)
My best guess, however, is that the person/s doing the job organizing on their end don't understand how the ES works, or that s/he probably has two hundred (or more?) great people interested in meeting with them. It bothers me more than a bit that a department, in 2009, wanting to recruit a new professor, would not be able to figure this out.

Absolutely! The person arranging things at ASA may not be the same one as the one responsible for picking candidates later. Even if it is the same person, this doesn't tell you anything. (I once had a fly-out to a school that didn't respond to my interview request at ASA. My lesson learned there was that you shouldn't read much into what happens at the ASA ES.)
