I'd like to note that I expressed interest in an ASA employment service interview in response to the first ad. I was a decent fit with several of the topics listed, but not the area. I received an e-mail explaining that they would not speak with me because all they really wanted was an Asia/Latin America specialist. This very clear and narrow focus was not clear from their job posting.

I have had similar experiences, Perse. Last year I received many rejection letters that labeled the position in a certain area that I was not in. That area was usually one of many listed in the job ad, that did not prioritize areas and often listed the special area in the middle of a list of other areas I overlapped with. Apparently, others out there knew something I didn't, since Rumor Millers would refer to it by the special labels, not listed in the job ads. Apparently I'm not in the right social networks to get these details? I know Depts often define very broad positions as to attract as many candidates as possible and to free them from administrative restraints should they choose to select outside their defined areas. While it offers Depts that freedom, it also marginalizes candidates' chances and wastes our time. Then again, I'm getting used to it. Heck, I never even *heard* back from 25 employers last year to my application! I like this blog so far in that the posting going on in the new jobs area has a number of people commenting on them, indicating what the REAL desired area is. That's a great benefit!

Perse, I had the same experience. It was a very badly written ad - and really disappointing. I wish I could say that's been my worst experience with a job ad that doesn't really say what the employer is really looking for, but it's not!
