how many employers were at last year's ES? so far it seems there are only about 12 already listed on the site.... just trying to get an idea if this will increase or if this is all i should expect! Well, one thing to keep in mind is the free fall of the market. There were about 150 universities present in the 2007 ES. Last year that number fell to 71. So far E20 is the highest employer number, which means 20 universities. I'm C221. My advisor is on a search committee with jobs listed on ES and the highest candidate number she has seen so far is 404. Not a very promising job to candidate ratio. Just curious, what's the highest candidate number out there? Can anyone beat C404?

I joined the ES like 30 seconds after they sent out the email, and I was C201- so I think they may have started those numbers at c200. That still means over 200 candidates, but that's not as bad as over 400.

upper 100s here... so there are in reality only 16 jobs that are assistant prof in the US. 6 of those want Race and Ethnicity primarily... so of those that don't do Race and Ethnicity there are 10 jobs for the rest of use... BTW: have requested 3 interviews and confirmed 2 of those.

For those of you have received responses (or just sent invitations), did you write a short note to the employer stating your interest in the position or anything else?
Thank you for your responses.

Does anyone know how many candidates registered for ES last year? I wonder if 400+ is a lot.

C110 here. And I signed up pretty quickly when the email came in. Maybe they started the candidate numbers at 100? Still not great, if there are over 400, but slightly less horrific.

As someone who listed a position last year, I would like to make the following suggestion regarding the question above about a short note (#53) and then have a couple of additional points to keep in mind.
Unless the ad is for an open position, it can be really helpful to receive a note about why you may be a match. I had listed a position that was rather specific and received requests from people whose CVs made it in no way obvious how they were a fit. A note can help in such a situation.
Two additional things to keep in mind.
1. The ASA forms are rather limited, employers are sometimes left having to choose from among less-than-desirable options when listing a job so don't read too much into what those preset fields tell you about a job. Rather, check the actual text of the ad.
2. While I appreciate that looking for a job is super stressful (obviously I've been there), please realize that many of the employers are taking time away from other things they would like to do at ASA to interview. Being on a hiring committee is a service obligation. Sure, it can be an exciting time for a department and nice to have input on the selection, but it's also a lot of time. Anything you can do at your end to ease the process will be appreciated (e.g., make it easy for the employer to figure out your background, interests, etc.).
