I submitted my application to Stanford today. Curiously, the letters hadn't been uploaded. (Maybe not so curious, considering my advisors, but anyway....) Does anyone know how this system worked? Did it send emails to people (or "their people"). And were there boxes to tick about the candidates, or just places to upload letters? Expertise on this greatly appreciated...

I'm curious also, because two of my letter writers swear they did not get an automatic email from the system. I think I'm just going to have people send letters in by post. Sure, they will get there a little late, but at least they will get there. Stanford will probably be cool with it - IMO its their fault for going high tech with this so called inter-web. This here discipline does not turn on a dime!

There was a box to check to send email reminders. My recommenders got it (though only two have uploaded so far). Also, the deadline has been extended until the 21st.

Those who already applied (or maybe even just started the application process) got an email stating the deadline had been extended because of unclarity about the writing samples. I don't recall whether they said the deadline has also been extended for people who hadn't/haven't yet started.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I noticed here: academicjobsonline.org/ajo/Stanford/Sociology/121that the date appeared to have changed, but I was not sure if it was always 9/21/09. Does anyone mind clarifying the writing samples issue then? Thank you in advance.

Here's the message:
Dear Applicants:
Although there is no requirement for the number of writing samples, we have provided enough space to submit up to four. Our faculty would ideally prefer you submit two to three. The review of applicants has been moved to Monday, Sept. 21 so please feel free to update your online application as you wish.
I hope this clarifies the number of writing samples required and wish you all the best of luck!
Sincerely, Susan Lynn Martin Administrative Associate Department of Sociology Stanford University
