Yes, it is an impressive group. They must have gotten funding to hire a non-junior person.

I don't know that those people are necessarily the qualitative candidates...I know at least one on that list has a new book about to come out and has been going around to all the top programs giving a talk on the new book to promote it, but I'm pretty sure that person is not looking to change jobs.

Don't your departments have colloquium? I thought most departments had weekly (or biweekly) seminars where they invite external (and internal) speakers to present their research. Some departments have more funding to bring in external candidates than others, so this doesn't necessarily flag "job talk" to me, particularly if this is a department that values a qualitative research perspective.

They have three qual researchers all coming in at the beginning of December--doesn't look like an ordinary colloquium schedule.

If you've ever served on a colloquium committee before, you'd know that these are definitely job talks - at least that's how it works where I am.

Even if they were hiring at the associate level with their assistant job ad, these are some of the best full professors in the field. If these are job talks, then they must have pulled together some serious dough to make this a senior hire then, right?

But it wasn't just an "assistant job ad":
"University of Maryland – College Park. The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track position from persons with expertise in qualitative research methods. Rank is open, and the position is subject to final budgetary approval."

I can confirm that those three talks you see scheduled on the department calendar in the beginning of December are for the qualitative position.

I heard from a reliable source that they felt the dean was more likely to fund the position if the aimed for a big name. They recently lost Lareau and Bianchi, and they are trying to build up the program and the school.

I heard from a well-networked senior scholar that two of the three interviewees are probably looking for raises at home, and would probably never leave their current university for personal reasons. I also hear that Maryland often tries to get big names, but they often fall through. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.

One of the people wants to leave her department; a second one it's at a department that can't give any raise... The info of someone looking for a raise is only for the candidate of the top 15 dept
