U of Maryland just reposted their qualitative position in the ASA job bank. It was listed with a 9/30 deadline and now it has a 10/30 deadline.
What would that mean for people who already applied and haven't heard anything?

I think it means they didn't get the application they were hoping for.

They want an Associate Professor.

Right. Which is why they advertise for "tenured or tenured-track."
It's most likely because they finally got budgetary approval, FWIW.

there's also a separate position relisted for an expert in military sociology with a similar deadline. perhaps both need applicants and/or have gotten budgetary approval?

They are trying to replace Annette Lareau. They want a senior person.

She's moved to UPenn. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annette_LareauMaryland may also try someone more junior [less money, & possibly less likelihood to move], so I think its worth submitting an application if you meet qualifications.

It is my sense (as a member of the department) that UMD is more concerned with hiring someone who can teach qualitative methods, contribute to the theory concentration, advise/train grad students, and bring in grant money since there are a lot grads who currently don't have much faculty research support because of the exodus of qual faculty over the past 3 years. I wouldn't assume that means the cmte is not open to making a junior hire, but if you don't have a strong record of pubs, you're probably wasting your time.

Hmmmm. Logically, how do we get from "hiring someone who can teach qualitative methods, contribute to the theory concentration, advise/train grad students, and bring in grant money" to "if you don't have a strong record of pubs, you're probably wasting your time"?
I can see how "pubs" are related to grants, but the other two?
Isn't sociology grand? If all you want is a strong record of pubs, why not just say so?

Because clearly they want someone who has a strong pubs record AND they want someone to teach qualitative methods and contribute to the theory concentration.
That's not unusual. Professors have more than one role/wear many different hats.

To follow up on my initial post, I was simply responding to previous posters' speculation about what rank UMD is trying to hire at for the qual position. To clarify, I am a grad student, not faculty, and was sharing my perspective on the situation in terms of the things the senior faculty appear to value in the hiring process. Pubs - both in terms of quantity and quality - and the demonstrated ability to get $$ for research and fund RAs both appear to be very important to the various hiring committees (which are generally composed of the same people every time around). None of this is particularly unusual for a R1.

can anyone confirm the wiki rumor that maryland has scheduled in person interviews for the qual position? Well if you go to their website and look at their events, they have talks by outside (not junior) scholars who do qual work. I'd guess that those are job talks. The military talks listed were definitely job talks for that position.

Well, if those are the candidates...that's quite an impressive group.
