Usually in online forums, an active moderator can delete posts or exile posts to a wasteland thread. There are a number of posts in the Harvard thread, and the U of Florida and USF threads, as well as posts by other trolls, which in my view should be moved or deleted by damastes (or another moderator, if there are any).
Can the moderator take control over this board and quarantine the riff-raff? Or at least require that people who want to post sign up for an account?

No way, some of those posts are interesting. I think at this point it is better to just ignore comments if we don't like them, not create an authority figure to make them away. I don't feel the need for someone to 'take control' and eliminate the 'riff-raff.' Good grief.

Also, forcing people top sign up is a bad idea because it makes the entire forum less anonymous!

A little less anonymity would lead to more reliable information. I think the rumor mill can just as easily to more harm than good. In previous years there are scholars who have been subject to so much discussion and ridicule that they now carry baggage over the stupid f**king rumor mill where there is absolutely no accountability for what people say. If people had to sign their name to what they wrote, all the f**king bullnuts would stop. Good grief.

Just to clarify, I am not a moderator, nor do I want to be. I've posted a lot here I want to keep up with the listings in soc this year. Very cathartic to see so many jobs, given the state of the economy!

The board guidelines are a sticky at the top of the folders...they read:
# Please do not list names # Please maintain a supportive, helpful environment # Feel free to share positive and negative job search/interviewing experiences
Anything that violates the guidelines (really just the first two) should be moved to the "anonymous bullnuts" thread.

The day a login is required to post here is the day Ill stop posting here completely.
First of all, by forcing people to sign in, administrators to this place will have access to emails and other potentially personal details. As I have no idea who runs this place, and as Im sure they want to remain anonymous as well, that right there is a problem.
Add to that the fact that any of these public boards are easily hacked and then we have a situation where many other people could have access to that info.
And never mind someone forgetting to log out in a public computer.
All for what? Forcing people to sign in will make any of the information more realiable? How?
And considering this place was created to precisely divulge "behind the scenes" details and other info not publicly available, there can be many situations where an apparent troll is actually being truthful. Yes, the gossip on the harvard thread appears to be false regarding rice and harvard itself, but I also know it is true regarding duke.
As for the trolls, ignore them and they'll go away.
The alternative is trusting an anonymous person to make decisions about what is true or not, and keeping everyone else anonymous.

Lol. Im the original "anonimity is key," and the second is just an impostor.
Yeah, the current set up has problems with impostors like that. Still, Id rather have more, rather than less, anonymity.

I vote for not changing the way things are, i think if you have less anonymity we will have less people posting as a result. Although I do wish there was a way to ban the economic dude.
