For those of you with websites (and a bit of tech saviness) you can place a hidden web tracker on your site to see who is checking out your stuff. Never thought this would be so much fun--another way to avoid working on your dissy. It tells you where, when, how long, which pages, etc... There are a few free trackers online--this is the one I used: www.statcounter.com/

google analytics allows you to map your hits as well... so when you apply to boston university and get four hits from boston, you know they're totalllly smitten. either that or it's your crazy ex.

statcounter makes a map too. the only downside of tracking is that it tracks where their internet service provider is located, not the individual themselves. so the location may be sort of off.

this just reminded me to check the stat counter on my professional website that I haven't checked in like a year....and it turns out that yesterday someone from one of the schools hiring in my subfield checked out my website! ahhhhhhh! what does it mean???

Don't know about statcounter, but Google also shows you how long people spent looking at your page(s). Don't know how much you have posted, Anonymouse, but I think >30 sec is positive. still, I wouldn't make much out of one visit.

although its totally reasonable to assume it may be a sign of interest-- it should be noted that very often visitors are just other students and job market candidates. the kind of people who read and post here.

oh yeah I know that, but this school doesn't have a grad program AND the username of the person showed up on statcounter (sometimes they do when your IP location is tied to your name) so I know exactly who it was (it was a prof in the department). This prof clicked around the different pages I have for about 2 minutes. I know it doesn't mean anything, but at this point any little scrap of information is enough to send me into a mood swing.

so having installed a web tracker, i have to say i'm a bit obsessed with checking the stats. someone from a random place in the US (and nowhere near a school i've applied to) has clicked on my page several times a day for the last three or four days. this is a little creepy, and not at all what i imagined would happen when i installed the web tracker.

ha I have people from all sorts of different countries clicking on my page.
it could be people you know googling you and finding your webpage
it could be people from other grad programs googling you- especially if your department lists you as "on the job market" (mine does, and I'd say 90% of the hits I get are from schools I haven't applied to, so I have to assume it's other grad students checking me out)
it could that someone's internet routes them through some random address- I live on the eastern side of the US but my internet IP always shows up as seattle for some reason. (So it could even be you!)
