U of Wisconsin-Madison is listed on the wiki as both having requested more materials and as scheduling interviews. But the deadline for application is not for a whole month - November 20th, according to the ASA website.
Any idea what's up with this?

I did a postdoc at UW, and as I recall, they brought people in on a rolling basis, not necessarily clustered in a group of 3-4 as a lot of other places do. It was kind of, see a person, if you like them, make an offer. If you aren't sure, interview a couple more.
But, this may not be true this time around, FWIW. I don't have any inside info this time, although I do know someone who was asked to send in more materials recently.
But, this is another reason to get your app in as soon as possible. Most places, even if they don't work in a rolling way like UW has, start looking at files as they come in and people can coalesce around candidates early (this happens in my current dept.).

I know that at least one person has an interview scheduled.

The WI system is pretty strict in the selection process of candidates. Review of applications can only take place AFTER the review date is specified, and interviews can only occur AFTER a list of potential candidates is determined by the committee. Now, this might not apply to "invited talks" from potential target hires that may take place BEFORE a review date, but these are not specified as "job talks" or actual interviews.

That is not true. Wisconsin soc. has, in several different years, brought in a candidate before the app. deadline. They tend of bring in one at a time, and the deadline is when they stop accepting apps., not when they start reviewing [no matter what their literature says]. There is indeed at least one interview--a real job talk--scheduled for Wisc.

Indeed, there is definitely one job talk scheduled at UW.

I'm wondering how long after you have sent your application UW got in touch with you to ask for materials or to schedule an interview.
They must have received my application a little over a week ago. Should I cross them off my list yet?

I sent my application on 10/26. On 11/5 I was asked to send writing samples . You should not give up hope at all!

Yes, my sense is that Madison keeps a pretty close eye on what are schools are up to, so even if you do not make the short list you could still get an interview (if you get one elsewhere that is). Last year they did not make an offer until April, for example...

Madison made a few offers last year for the open position, and eventually two were accepted. The last offer was made in February. They do have the unusual practice of bringing in one candidate at a time, and the sequence pretty much depends on who get interviews/offers in peer institutions. So for those on their short list, please do not give up. It will be a very long process before Madison confirms a hire, unless their first or second offer is accepted by the lucky ones.

one of their hires last year was a spousal hire (or at least the person hired had a spouse who was also hired last year- to a different department)

The sociology department at Wisconsin does not make spousal hires. One of the candidates who received an offer had a spouse who also received an offer from a different department at Wisconsin, but their hires were not connected. Wisconsin soc made multiple hires last year, so it will be interesting to see what happens this year.

If you look at their website you can see one of the star candidates is already interviewing there right after the thanksgiving break...
