This is my second go-around on the market, and thinking back, last year (when I applied selectively to 9 schools hiring in my subfield) 8/9 had interviewed people by the time I had an interview in the first week of November. I remember because I got an interview at the very last school I was waiting to hear back from.
This year I've applied to 45 schools so far, and less than 1/3 have gotten back to people (from what I can tell on the wiki). And November is half over.
So is the market running later this year? Anyone else who has done this before want to chime in?

I definitely think the market is running later this year (which would also go along with the thought that schools were scheduling ASA interviews late or not at all). I think folks are having to wait longer to get positions approved, which delays announcements, which delays application due dates, which pushes back the review of applications, which pushes back interviews...etc. I would bet that a lot of the schools that are doing interviews now had their positions approved over the summer (or had strong indications that it was going to be approved). This was tougher to manage at a lot of places due to the budget crunch. It will put those candidates who are interviewing now in a tougher spot, potentially, when they receive an offer -- they will have less information about other possibilities. Of course, we won't cry for those people too much. In fact, this could actually help things move quicker in the early spring; if there's a first round that will get offered and accepted shortly before or after the holidays; then a second round that moves after that. That was probably more musing than you were looking for. I'm over-caffeinated this morning.

I think every year has its quirks. This year's market is NOT later than 2007-8 market, for example. That year, my first interview was mid November, I had one more at the end of November, and then a small handful in December and one in January [they were so-called R1s]. So it may or may not be related to budget issues, or maybe last year moved early because people were afraid of getting their budgets cut!

Last year by this time I had done or scheduled several (5ish) phone interviews at this point, and scheduled one in-person interview. This year, one phone interview so far. Also, last year my impression from my own experience and what was going on in the rumor mill was basically nothing happened from about mid-December through mid-January. Which is interesting given "have a job"s report. Maybe people's experiences last year also varied from mine. Based on the wiki, if we're talking about R1 schools especially, it looks like several of them have already scheduled phone and even in-person interviews, which suggests the market may actually be earlier than in 07-08 compared to "have a job"s experience...at least at that level. However, more generally I guess this suggests the dangers of basing conclusions on an N of 1-2.

Just went to last year's wiki. By nov 14th of last year, about twice as many places had scheduled in person interviews as this year.
If that is a matter of simply there being more positions or not, I don't know, because I didnt track the total number of positions last year, positions that were cancelled, etc.
Of course, this could all be a matter of people simply not updating the wiki anymore...

Oh, and looking at this year's wiki, there seems have been a lot of positions deleted. Are those malicious deletes or are they legitimate?

im getting apprehensive heading into the next month. i assume if i dont hear anything from anywhere by tomorrow then i likely wont until mid-january. i guess it would be kind of nice to just have a break for a while, but there are so many places that have not seemed to have done anything yet it makes for a nerve-wracking break!
