In recent fantasies about leaving all this behind, I've thought I might try to become an editor at an academic press. Anyone know anything about this? Will my PhD help me? What is an entry-level position like for someone with a PhD?

Hey there, I'd suggest reading the earlier thread on bailing if you haven't yet : socjobs2009.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=6&action=display&thread=339There are resources there that will get you started, including links to blogs and a listserv, which just recently had job ads for McGraw-Hill that might be close to what you're looking for, or at least allow you to get your foot in the door. Good luck!

Yes, I read that thread, and have glanced at some of the websites that were recommended. What I was really looking for, though, was someone with personal knowledge of the industry who can tell me what kind of position I would be qualified for with zero experience and a PhD in Sociology. For instance, I just saw an ad for an acquisitions editor position that required 3 years experience but only a BA. Is that typical? Does having a PhD mean I could get away with not having the required amount of experience?

From my experience, you're likely to find people on the wrk4us listserv who could answer that. Their PhDs might be in history instead of soc, but they could still give you some insight.

I saw that position sent out over work4us if you did not find it there. I have seen such great advice given on that listserv so it may be a great place to ask. Good luck!

As someone who used to work at an academic press (pre-grad school) and who has many friends who still work in the industry and have worked their way up, I would say that it is NOT an awesome field, especially for an academic bailer. It's really not very intellectually stimulating, it's not high paying for almost ANY one, and it's a really, REALLY tough industry to get into right now - if anyone is in more trouble than academia right now, it's academic publishing. With open source, online access, and other major changes in the industry, even the most established presses are having a hard time staying afloat.
