For those who have some knowledge on this topic, I ask what are some things that start-up monies can be used for?
I have thought of some items such as computer, software, printer, journals, books, membership in organizations and summer salary, but for larger start-up packages, what are other research-related purchases?

It really depends on the school and department. Some schools (like the California state ones) are well known for offering large startup packages (like 100k), but that has to cover computer, office furniture, relocation expenses, and RAs. Other places offer much lower figures but provide all of the above. At these schools, your startup can cover course buyouts, summer salary, journal memberships, professional association fees (remember that ASA is much more expensive for faculty than students), and books. It can also cover things like travel somewhere to work on collaborative projects. People also use this money to hire copy editors, computer programmers, etc. to help advance their research. And, at some places, there is an expectation that you'd use some of that money to organize mini-conferences/seminars or bring in speakers (who may be colleagues).
As far as dollar amounts go, I'd say the following is pretty standard (assuming that computer, moving, etc are covered separately): ~Top 30 Public R1s: $10-20k Other Public R1s: $2-10k Top 50 Private R1s: $20-60k Other Privates (LACs and SLACs): ?? Other Public: ?? (probably little, if any, startup)
