I have an upcoming interview at a SLAC where I've been asked to teach a guest lecture on a topic of my choice (instead of giving a traditional job talk) in an intro course. I have two options for topics, and I'm having a really hard time figuring out which one to choose, so I'm soliciting your opinions lovely rumor mill-ers.
Background- I specialize in 2 different subfields that have some overlap, but are distinct areas. The job ad was for area A using Method X, and my dissertation topic is on area B using method X (I have other publications in area A).
My options for a talk are:
1) a lecture on the topic of my dissertation in area B- this wouldn't specifically be on my dissertation findings, but on the topic more broadly. The talk I have in mind would also allow me to teach a bit about method X as well, and would include about 5 minutes of talking about area A, but that would not be the focus of the talk.
Advantages: Highlights my dissertation topic, incorporates method x
Disadvantages: the job ad is for area A, this is on area B- and they already have a faculty member specializing in area B (but not in A). I also will have to write a new lecture, as i don't have one put together yet- but given that it's related to my dissertation topic, it won't be a huge pain to do that.
2) A lecture on a topic in area A that I have previously given as a guest lecturer in an intro class. This topic has some more opportunities for student involvement than area B, and touches on method X, but not to the extent that option 1 would
advantages: Shows I can teach stuff other than my dissertation, I already have the lecture prepped and it went over really well the last time I taught it, it's in the area of the job ad.
disadvantages: doesn't address anything I talk about in my dissertation, so doesn't show off my dissertation research at all (although a friend pointed out that I will probably be talking a lot about my dissertation at other points in the interview)
So which to pick?? I have a few weeks to decide, but I really have no idea which way to go. Opinions welcome!
