Penn State Schuylkill invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Sociology (tenure track, 36 weeks) to begin August 2010, or as negotiated Responsibilities: Teach three courses each semester using traditional and hybrid delivery modes. Courses may include introductory sociology, social problems, and courses in areas of research specializations. Teaching assignments may require teaching day, evening and/or Saturday classes as needed. Publish in refereed journals. Participate in professional organizations and in course, curriculum, and program development. Advise students and provide career guidance. Participate in campus, university, and community service activities. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Sociology or related discipline preferred; ABD considered. Evidence of potential in research and publication is expected. Areas of teaching and research interest desired: diversity, applied sociology, community development, political sociology, criminal justice. Commitment to high-quality instruction in a student-centered environment is desired. Interest in active and collaborative learning, the instructional use of technology, and hybrid and online teaching is an advantage. Prior college-level and online teaching experience preferred. Enthusiasm for working in a multidisciplinary environment is important. Research activity that encourages student participation, and student participation in public scholarship/service learning, is desired. Located near Schuylkill Haven in east central Pennsylvania, it is close to Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. The 70-acre campus has 150 full and part-time faculty and staff. The Schuylkill Campus offers baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Information Sciences and Technology, Interdisciplinary Humanities, Psychology, and a B.S. in Nursing for Registered Nurses.
