anyone from last year want to chime in? Cause ASA is in like 3 days, and there's still only around 26 jobs posted

Sounds like 1/3 to 1/2 the number of employers relative to last year. It could be a failure of planning on ASA's part. This time next year, there will be a new crop of young Ph.d.'s collecting ethnographic data at minimum wage jobs.
As the market always works, those are also the people who should have chosen not to pursue a Ph.D. in the first place! ;D

I vote failure to plan. The jobs bank did not even open until 7/17--nearly a month behind schedule--not much time for employers to get a posting up. I almost forgot about it several times myself. I think ASA ought to refund my $25--but what are the chances of that? Probably less than me getting a job this year!

Where's your sense of equity, frank? I can't imagine that ASA will come close to breaking even. They have only collected a little over $18,000 (400 candidates X $25 + 30 jobs X $275).
There's the orientation staff and bell-ringer to pay. Technology expenses--you are aware the employment service site went through a sophisticated upgrade that will increase your chances of getting a job, right? Don't forget about the hospitality account, free food, drinks. And the door prizes, don't forget the door prizes (I'm hoping for one of those iPod touches). Kleenex boxes for snot-nosed punks like me and whiners like you. And someone has to clean up that mess.
Who can put a price on the creative genius that combined interviewing with speed dating? Who are you to complain about me spending time and money on something that will turn out to be completely worthless, like posting rants, half-baked ideas, and wild speculations on this ridiculous discussion board?
Come on frank . . .

All But Disillusioned: I owe YOU $25, good ma'am and/or sir, for setting me straight. On second thought, such a dressing-down is...priceless.

It was suggested to me that the ES has been anemic for years, and may be on its last legs not because of this year's market conditions but because of a general consensus that it is not very useful for employers, most of which conduct searches later in the semester/year. ES, in other words, may be being phased out.
