Not complaining, as I feel totally lucky to have landed a job in this suck-ass market. Spouse is not exactly thrilled about moving to smallish town in the Midwest, though.

I can understand the whole "small town in the Midwest" thing. I had an interview with a "small town in the Midwest" school and have to say I was not disappointed at all when they decided not to hire me (or anyone for that matter from what I understand). My spouse is very happy now that I have taken a job near several large cities and many great universities. I think it is much easier to move somewhere where there are opportunities available for everyone. Unfortunately, someone always has to make a sacrifice.

My spouse (who is a flaming atheist) is "not exactly thrilled" about moving to my job in the south due to fears regarding crazy religious people (not that all religious people are crazy...but you know what I mean). I'm also slightly worried about that.
But we're both happy I found a job that I really like, and happy about how cheap it is to live there...and happy I have a job at all since my spouse has been unemployed for a while, and 2 people living off a grad student stipend is not so awesome.

I would guess partner/spousal reactions are probably mostly based on their own life goals/plans and where they are from (both area of the country and urban/suburban/rural). As a previous poster on another forum has mentioned, some people prefer a small town in the Midwest. In our case it wasn't a preference but I don't think either of us would have minded because zir goals/plans weren't particularly location dependent. Zie is mostly just glad I've got a job.
