(Snarky comment: I find the use of "hu" highly irritating.)
From what I've heard, there is A LOT of in fighting at A&M, that seems to cut along the usual qual. - quant. lines. Plus, I've heard that the dominant faction there (you can guess which one that is) is, probably to compensate for the right-wing student body, militant leftist. Maybe that's a plus to some, but not I.

It's a 6/5 teaching load and all faculty members share a single office. I heard that when you show up, they ask you which faction you plan to join, so that faculty members in each faction know whether to try to beat you up and steal your lunch money, or protect you. Also, I heard that President Obama is actually a cyborg, and the moon landing was faked. Regardless, you shoud definitely believe every rumor you hear and/or read on this site, especially when it involves people who are your likely among your rivals for a position knocking that position. p.s. You should also get extremely upset and indignant whenever someone(s) calling themselves "Economist" takes it in their head to see how much they can antagonize people who have a hard time recognizing over-the-top satire and are easily made defensive. p.p.s. No, I am not "Economist."

Plus, I've heard that the dominant faction there (you can guess which one that is) is, probably to compensate for the right-wing student body, militant leftist. Maybe that's a plus to some, but not I. First off, Texas A&M is a REAL university. It emphasizes agriculture and vocational education that is the foundation of the real economy. Secondly, the Texas A&M is the REAL Texas. Not the Communists that have destroyed Austin, but conservatives who founded the Republic. These are the people of God. Thirdly, the soc department is EXTREMELY liberal and responsible for much debauchery and mayhem. There is a reason why the teaching load is 4/4. It is one of the departments where we fill the 'quotas' our federal government has forced upon us. Finally, the split of the qualitative and quantitative people is natural. Those doing quantitative techniques are legitimate and the result of 3000 years of Western thought and culture. Going to bars and having conversations is often cover for ACORN. The scientists at A&M are quantitative, while the activists are trying to subvert the morals of good Texans and our elected government. God bless the quantitative scientists and hard working people at A&M.

Texas A&M is an R1 with a 2/2 teaching load and usually with a 1/1 or 2/1 in the first year and a 2/0 in a TT faculty's 4th year.
The College of Liberal Arts has very little to do with any agricultural research.
No infighting that I've seen.

As a fifth year at A&M soc, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the department. I do qualitative work and have had no issues with quantitative faculty or students. I am close with junior faculty who love the department, but find College Station a difficult town in which to live. Some live in Houston, 1.5 hours away, or Austin, 2 hours away. But there are many who love the small town and have lived their happily for decades.
It's an RI so it is a 2/2 or 1/1 teaching load. Clearly, faculty that receive large outside grants can opt to buy out their courses during a semester. Junior faculty have been able to teach grad courses early on in their career here. The program has risen 10 spots since the previous rankings of sociology departments, but is still not in the top 30.

A&M is an R1, 2/2 teaching load, generous start up, no one shares an office, affordable, close to big cities. Yes it is in the middle of nowhere, yes the undergrad students are conservative, but the department is collegial and profs and grad students, progressive. The dept has both quant and qual and grants tenure based on books or articles. Oh, and faculty got raises last year, including the 10 assistant or so that are making their way through the tenure process!

I hear that the University of Georgia may have a position this year. Still awaiting official approval.

Where did you hear of this potential UGA position? Any word on the contents of the position (areas, etc.)?
