Care to elaborate? This information seems dubious or at least incomplete, since their deadline hasn't even arrived yet!

I'm not sure how to elaborate. Someone I know got an email which asked them to send letters of rec to the email address listed on the job advertisement, and 2 writing samples.

Weren't you supposed to send writing samples with the original application materials?
Also, do you mind stating what you area is within soc? They're advertising an open position, but they also had a list of "wants."

Considering that: 1- The ad requested that writing samples be submitted with the application 2- the deadline isn't until October 1st
My guess is that your friend is either pulling your leg or or the people are duke are requesting writing samples because his application was incomplete.

I submitted my materials to Duke, including the writing samples, the day that the job was posted. On Friday I was asked (by email) to submit letters and writing samples if I hadn't done so. Today I got asked to complete the EEO survey.

This may be asked of a large pool of applicants [~50]. The original posting stated:
Send electronic versions of vitae and writing samples addressed to Prof. Gary Gereffi, Chair, Search Committee, Department of Sociology, Duke University, Durham NC 27708-0088, using the e-mail address facsearch@soc.duke.edu with the subject line “Junior Search.”
and
Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and considered until the position is filled. We guarantee full consideration to applications arriving before October 1, 2009. Please do not submit letters of recommendation with initial application; they will be requested later in the review process.
Please do not take this as being personally discouraging. I am generally skeptical of the department--not a pleasant picture. Their current department does not list any assistant professors on staff [http://fds.duke.edu/db/aas/Sociology/faculty], though there are two VAPS. If the hired person is going to teach stats, they will need to on par with James Moody, Ken Land, & Phil Morgan. It will take a few ASR/AJS/SF to get tenure. You may still not get tenure with those qualifications, but you can probably easily land a position at UNC!

I agree with Mr. Bosch. At this point, my sense is that everything is part of winnowing-down process, and by that I mean from 300 to some smaller number of applications. And, the emails I've received from them are not at all personal.

I too was asked to submit more materials last friday (9/18) by email. I heard from a reliable source that they did their initial cut. I'm not sure to what number.

well it's lame if they did their cut by last friday, considering the due date isn't until next week.
I sent in my application last Thursday night and got the EEO email on wednesday but not an email asking for more materials. I'm going to keep an optimistic view and assume that since they sent that email out last friday they hadn't had time to review my application yet.

maybe they're screening as applications come in, or in batches (kind of an 'on Friday we go through what came in that week', or both. But right, who knows to what percentage.

I also heard from a reliable source (and confirmed by checking out their online schedule of events) that someone currently on the market is giving an "unofficial" job talk there tomorrow.

Pretty sure that the person just mentioned is Erving Goffman's daughter, so good luck to us all!

But, even superstars in the end can only take one job.
