I agree with anony. I get very anxious thinking about all the applicants. But, I also get some comfort knowing that I have applied to a number of positions. There are a lot of really good departments hiring this year, & the number of ads is also encouraging. A lot of these places also have the same people applying for positions, & each candidate can only have one job. Even not knowing your credentials, I would bet you will get an offer.

Anyone know if dook hired said person, or if other superstars are being recruited? Those devils should be tarred and feathered!

Let's just hope that said super-star doesn't try and take a page out of one of her advisor's book and hold two positions at once .

Has anyone heard anything from Duke? Just wondering if the rumors posted earlier had any validity.

A friend of mine interviewed there in mid-November and was told to expect news of hiring decision in a few weeks.

Note that they say they are still only at a finalist list--no hire!

Dear Colleagues:
I wish to thank you for applying to our search for a Junior Faculty position in the Department of Sociology at Duke University. We had a remarkably strong pool this year, with over 300 applicants for a single position.
I am writing to let you know that your application is no longer under active consideration by the Sociology Department at Duke. It was a long and difficult process to narrow down our excellent pool of applicants to a small set of finalists, and you are not among that list.
Thank you very much for your interest in our faculty position. I wish you the best of luck in your job search and your longer-term professional development in sociology.
Sincerely yours,

I got the following very nice email today: Dear Colleague: I wish to thank you for applying to our search for a Junior Faculty position in the Department of Sociology at Duke University. We had a remarkably strong pool this year, with well over 300 applicants for a single position. I wanted to take a little extra time to let you know how highly the search committee thought of your work. Of those who applied for our position, we narrowed that list down to candidates who showed exceptional accomplishment and promise. You were in that upper tier of applicants. However, you did not make the list of finalists who we decided to invite for an interview. Speaking for the Department of Sociology, I want to thank you for the opportunity to review your application. We appreciate your willingness to be considered for our position. I wish you the best of luck and continued successful in sociology. Sincerely yours, (I now feel less bad about a typo I found in one of my application letters)

The person to whom Duke made an offer turned them down for another job.
