Have folks on this list been contacted, or is this more inside-baseball?

To clarify - you got an email from Rice saying you made it on a long/short list of 30 people?

Mine said: Dear X, Congratulations! You have made our long-short (top 30) list for our Assistant Professor Positions. However, your file is missing reference letters (3 are required). *stuff about where to send letters* Best Regards, Dude from Rice University reading this again I notice is says "positions" with an *S* at the end. Does that mean there are only 30 candidates for the 2 jobs, meaning I have a 1/15th chance rather than a 1/30th chance? I specialize in quant methods...were some people who got this letter urban ethnographers?

Yes, it does appear that we are all on this board! I am glad to see that they are considering people even if they don't have their letters in... These faculty can sure drag their f'g feet. Good luck to whomever gets the visits. It looks like a real plum gig, save for Houston itself! I would take it in a heartbeat.
