As an offer to Goffman has been extended, do you think Rice is just going through the motions? Perhaps they are going through the motions in case the superstar does not come through, or are justifying their hire?

This is probably untrue. If it is true, it would be dumb on Rice's part. There is a low chance that anybody would pick Rice over Harvard and Duke, so why would anybody roll out the red carpet just to be scooped by someone else...

Are you really claiming that Rice extended an offer to Goffman? I seriously doubt that is true.

Every year there are people who are hot on the market, and every year schools try to keep up with the other ones, inviting the same people to the same top jobs. I would not be surprised if that were the case with the aforementioned scholar and Rice. I imagine that this is a similar context that happened with a student from CUNY and another from Berkeley in recent years. This is the nature of the beast and it is nothing negative or positive about their scholarship. Just about the status game between sociology departments. Since Rice is starting a new PhD program, I imagine that someone from Princeton and with the, um, pedigree of Goffman would be a real boon to their already sharp program.
'Why do they roll out the red carpet?' The truth is, they have to. You don't just give away a job. I just feel sorry for the other two candidates... On the other hand, there's always the chance that the top choice will go elsewhere... And then I'd be pretty excited to be 2nd or 3rd on their list.

I'm about 95% sure that this is not true re: Rice.

I'm about 95% sure that this is not true re: Rice. Are you Adrian Monk?

Well then...the plot thickens. They don't call it the rumor mill for nothing.

No offers have been extended. No interviews have happened.
We expect to make decisions about interviews in the next 2-3 weeks.
Deep breaths, everybody.

Thanks RiceProf: I think that it is admirable that you are posting on here to assuage some fears, and provide some transparency...

I can confirm this. My guess is that the 'sorry, suckas' letter will follow shortly.

So I received my rejection letter from Rice today. It made me laugh as it was dated November 15, 2007. I guess the assistant didn't remember to change the date on the mail merge they used two years ago for rejection letters.

Sorry, rejected. What position was it for--urban or quant?
