They've scheduled several interviews for both positions.

In fact, offers have been extended. Good luck to everyone, and thanks for applying!

Wow, the troll appears again! I assume everyone can recognize that for what it is, but just in case...We actually begin our interviews next week.
It was an incredibly strong pool of applications (over 200) --and we hope to continue hiring steadily in the coming years and building our dept. as we start our grad program.
And, sorry about the date on the letter! (ugh)

Has anyone from the 30 long-list people received a rejection letter yet?

For the quant job, an offer has been made to a local who has connections to the department. They seem to be hiring locally, with 200 applications being cover for an inside hire.

Are you suggesting they hired one of their current postdocs?

Yes. I am sure they are well-qualified, but I would not have bothered applying had I knew beforehand. My info is from faculty who worked with said person in grad school, so I am fairly confident about outcome.

Again, this is misinformation. While we highly value our postdocs, Rice has a firm policy of not hiring our postdocs straight out of the program. None of our interviewees are currently at Rice.
I can't keep correcting the misinformation being spread here -- but felt compelled to respond to this since it could hurt our postdocs who are on the market (not to mention make our interviewees upset).
If anyone on our interview list has questions about this or any other aspects of the search, they should contact one of the search co-chairs. We expect to make a decision on both positions by mid-December. Anything else you read here or elsewhere about an offer before then is bogus.

Congrats to the Rice postdoc who has just accepted an offer for the urban ethnography position!

I heard something similar about the quant position, though its very much a rumor. It sounds like 'riceprof' is trying to stir up trouble.

I did not apply for this job and I have no inside info. However, the registered user Riceprof posted the ad for this job and posted info about the pool being narrowed down to 30 people. It seems to me that anything posted by this user has much more credibility than other recent posts in this thread.
I wonder how much of the misinformation on this board is intentional versus innocent.

Hi! Rice Postdoc here. Check my IP address if you like, I'm here in Houston. None of us are up for the department job. We have a series of well-qualified, very impressive candidates coming to campus, none of whom (as far as I know) have been given offers.
Last year, the first time I was on the market, this board was a great place to go for information, and even camaraderie, as people struggled through a rough year in the economy. This year, it's nothing but damage control. That's a real shame, because last year it felt like a community, and this year it's worse than useless -- it's outright damaging to people. And what for, really? What benefit is coming to those of you who are out spreading lies?
Best of luck to everyone.
