REALLY,
First of all, I think this process is difficult enough without being taken to task by self righteous posters.
Second, I think many of us are/were questioning whether the request for our letter meant anything. Just because many search committees are rude, inconsiderate, intentionally wasting others' time, and creating false hope doesn't mean it's not very confusing to those of us who are on the market for the first time. If you don't share the sense of confusion and frustration, that's fine.
However, it seems your rant would also be better placed on the venting board.

not yet bitter,
im not self-righteous...i'm just a realist. there seems to be this train of thought out there that we should know where we stand, whats going on in the process, etc. i am on the market for the first time as well...but i take a realistic approach. if someone wants me then i will find out, if they don't then I will eventually find out also.
as was stated earlier in this Cincinnati post...committees have to deal with a lot of applications, request, etc...this is a process for them just like it is for us, one that they are going through at the same exact time. and so they ask for more recs, writing samples, etc. when they have already made a short or long, or whatever list. say they decide none of the candidates that they interviewed are what they were looking for and they have to delve back into the pool of applicants...would you rather have a chance at this second go round because they requested more materials or for you to complete your application file...or not to have a shot at all because they didn't? think about you...
I know this is a frustrating process...it is for ALL of us...but again what is posted on these boards is just what the title says...RUMOR MILL...so until you hear it from the horses mouth...then just RELAX!

and to all that read/have read my post...it was not meant in the context of SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS, or DISRESPECT...and if it came across that way to you then...please accept my SINCEREST apologies.
i wish you all luck in your job search processes!

Just got a phone call from the search chair for an interview in January. Three cheers for me!

Me, too! The search chair said the department is trying to get the talks and an offer out quickly, so they can focus on hiring a new chair in February/March. Good luck, ditto!

Oh dear God in heaven this has now officially spiraled way out of control. I apologize for not finding this sooner and clearing up some of this nonsense. The job search process is brutal enough without all this crap information. If you're interested in the Cincinnati position, email me (jeffrey.timberlake@uc.edu).
First of all, "Ditto" and "Anoni" have not been invited in for an interview. No one has yet. That will happen soon. On the Internet, I believe that's called being a "troll." In the rest of the world, that's called being a "liar." I have no idea what they get out of that kind of behavior, but this is the world we now live in, I guess.
Now, on to the thing that got some of you so worked up. We were instructed by our EEO office to inform all applicants that their files were complete or not. It was utterly unrelated to the long short list, though in retrospect I can see how you might have gotten that impression. Apologies for that.
I wish you all the very best of luck in your job searches. I understand that this is an outrageously slack market, and I feel for you all. Have a drink, take a steam, or get a hug. But my best advice is to stop reading this rumor mill.
