Cincinnati has made a "long, short" list. i received a phone call this morning.
They are requesting more materials from candidates on this list, as their initial call only asked for a letter, CV, and recs.

I got the same request (a phone call today)! They expect to decide who to interview in 2 weeks, and then bring people in in January.

I got the same phone call, and asked for numbers. The long-short list is 19 candidates out of 215 applications.

I got contacted by email Monday to say one of my letters was missing--does that mean anything? Or was that just a courtesy? Definitely no phone call.

I also got that letter on Monday, but no phone call about being on a long short list.
Although if the list is that long, maybe they will be calling some of the people today?

I too got an email Monday asking for my missing recs, but no call about a long list. If they already have a long list, why would they contact us to say we are missing recommendations if we aren't on it? On the other hand, maybe they created this long list since Monday?

Phone calls were made on wednesday morning. The committee I think had met on tuesday to finalize the list. I think emails were probably sent out before that meeting to have a final look at candidates if you didn't have a complete file.

Just received this email:
Dear applicant: Earlier this week I emailed you to say that your file was missing one or more letters of recommendation. I said that I would be contacting you on Friday, December 6. Obviously, the December 6 part was off. Anyway, I am writing now to tell you that we have received a high volume of extra letters and it has taken us a while to process them. So, although many of you now have complete files, I won’t be able to tell you until Monday afternoon whether yours is complete or is still missing a letter. On the bright side, given that the number of files that will be incomplete by then will be relatively small, I will be able to tell you which letters you have in your file, which will tell you which are still missing. Thanks very much for your continued patience, -- Why are they going to all this trouble if they already have a long/short list?

Given that they told me on Wednesday that they would take "no more than 2 weeks" to make a decision about who to bring in for an interview in January, it seems like letting people know about missing letters on Monday would be cutting it close in terms of the committee requesting extra materials and reviewing everything. They asked me to send syllabi, 2 writing samples, a teaching philosophy and teaching evals. Unless their long-short list included people whose letters were missing? Or maybe the university requires that all applications be complete for review?

I also got the "Dear Applicant" email. I sure hope it means something-otherwise it feels like they're yanking our chain: "We have no interest in you, but go nag your letter writers anyway because they aren't hassled enough writing the other 78 letter you need for jobs that haven't pre-rejected you." Jeez Louise.

Doesn't it take a few weeks to weed through applications? Given last week was Thanksgiving and the 'application received' emails have just been sent, I would withhold judgment until later in December.

I can assure you that UC has in fact made a short list, contacted those people (even those with incomplete applications), and will be inviting people for interviews within a week or two.

If they do have a short list then it is total BULL SH*t to send out an e-mail about letters. That really pisses me off. I have better things to do with my time and I know my committee does as well. Not to mention some of my committee members ended up sending the letter TWICE because they didn't specify which letters were missing. If all of this is true, then this is in really bad form.
