I come from a top-10 program, & have known three 'superstars' [those who have interviewed or been hired in top 10 programs]. One had 6 pubs, but 2 ASR/AJS/SF articles. The other two had >10 pubs, one ASR/AJS. They spent 6 yrs. in grad school, on full fellowships.
I am not sure how they do this. The 5-6 pubs per year is beyond my comprehension. I can do 2-3 per year, so I guess I must settle for the minor full prof who publishes say 75 pubs over a 30 yr. career.

It's clearly both quality and quantity; as well as authorship. The "superstar" on the market has only one pub, but it's a sole-authored, lead ASR. That said, there are other "stars" with 6-10 pubs sole- or first-authored papers in major journals, but not necessarily the top 3. My guess is that there are only about 10 of these people of there. It's pretty easy to figure out who they are by searching the webpages of the best departments.

@anonx from Oct 1: Society of Fellows doesn't tell anyone who's in and who isn't in until mid-December. So I think this person is still in play.

Well, this person also appears to have a single, lead ASR paper and a very nice book contract... because a last name can't help you get any of those things either... *rolls eyes* I would have lost respect for these programs if they weren't already such a farce. Pining for the admiration of a bully is so 8th grade. And it only feeds their delusions of grandeur. Have we no self-respect?

Pining for the admiration of a bully is so 8th grade. And it only feeds their delusions of grandeur. Have we no self-respect? I know we're not supposed to go after individual people here, but I just checked out this 'superstar's' CV, and it sickens me that someone who has 1 ASR publication, 1 book review and a book contract (which is not the same as a book), has given TWO presentations (the same 2 presentations, 3+ times each), and has very little teaching experience is getting these kind of job offers. If you cut down my CV to just the past year it would look better than that (more pubs, more conference presentations and more teaching experience just from the last year alone!), except my pubs aren't in ASR, so I guess it totally makes sense that I wouldn't even make the first cut at Duke while this person is getting job offers from them and Harvard before the job season even starts.....in bizzaroland maybe. Excuse me while I go read the meritocracy myth again and feel sorry for myself for buying into it.

Puh-lease...if you're as good as you make yourself out to be then you'll be fine on the market. While the name may have helped, the fact of the matter is that she does excellent work and has great people writing letters for her. You really think that teaching experience and conference presentations (!) matter at all?

Let's not forget the automatic extra points one gets for being female and/or non-white. Diversity, ya know.

First, if this is your first realization that Duke is an R1 that doesn't prioritize teaching, you're clueless. Second, if you think R1 schools care a lot about how many presentations you've done, you're clueless as well (the rejection rate for conference presentations is very close to zero at most places, and doing lots of presentations doesn't mean they're good, interesting, or even competently done). Third, if you didn't know that a single ASR article usually counts more than having lots more "lesser" journal articles, you have my sympathies (I agree this method of evaluation is bad), but get with the program. Fourth, to minimize a book contract seems like petty sniping. That is a major accomplishment. Fifth, it's entirely possible that the person in question has glowing endorsements from some of the top people in the discipline. While that could be seen as unfair in that not everyone gets to work with superstars, it's also probably unreasonable to say that very strong recs from top people should be disregarded, particularly in the case of qualitative work, where output tends to be slow and diss committees may be better sources of info than just looking at pubs. Finally, have you bothered to read the article in question? It is really excellent work with great appeal to a wide array of audiences. Maybe your work is not as interesting - have you considered that?
I find it odd that I've become this person's defender, and it's obvious that she had unfair advantages in some ways--just as nearly all of us reading this board have had unfair advantages over most of the people in the world--but the pettiness of some of the complaints is annoying. I would encourage those who are unable to sleep because of her success to read the article, and enjoy and get excited about the good work it represents--rather than resenting her success.

Have you read the ASR article? This woman's research is incredible. She has enormous career potential. Plus her work shows dedication to the flied rather than an attempt to rack up a CV. I don't know the person in question at all, but I'd hire her. My CV has more on it that hers, but I still think she's not only a very accomplished sociologist but will contribute enormously to the field over time. I don't know why I feel compeeled to jump to her defense, but I guess I hope we'll all start trying to remove the planks from our own eyes.

All that having been said, it is still BS that Harvard + Duke would extend an offer without even interviewing other candidates. I think this is probably what pisses off people more in this situation...

Why is that BS? Most top schools don't interview several candidates, but pick a first, interview him/her, extend an offer and if they don't take it, move to #2.
The sociology job market has definitely moved earlier this year - I know there are at least two schools not listed on the wiki that already have interviews planned or have a very short list. This sort of early activity isn't happening in the other social sciences, including econ.

It is BS, because it shows that these schools care about hiring the candidate with the best hype, rather than the best candidate. If they cared about hiring the best candidate they would interview others first to make sure they were making the best choice.
