Praise the lord there are fields which systematically discriminate against people with family responsibilities, so women are disproportionately shut out of them! We wouldn't want to work with those horrible women or minorities! Any field that has women or minorities can't be a "real" science as we all know (like economics? roflmao!). Praise the lord this (undoubtedly white, male) economist has set us straight!

There are female economists. But only a few do research, as most are the teachers and caretakers of the minds of future businessmen and entrepreneurs. Minority economists who are from Asia are extremely smart, and have even won Nobel Prizes. The other groups entertain the business majors, either in class with Affirmative Action Ph.D.s, or in various forms of entertainment. As long as women stay in the home or caretake, and non-Asian minorities entertain, the world will succeed. This recession and the ongoing destruction of America are examples where the exact opposite happens!

Re: superstar(s) Well, I'm sure the last name had nothing to do with any of that other stuff, just the job offer.
Just to be clear, I have little to no idea who this person is, nor am I competing for that sort of position, I'm just saying as sociologists we ought to know better than to think the job market is simply meritocracy at work. And that goes for more than just the "superstars."
Re: hu I prefer zie, personally.
Re: anon/anony So you thought you'd double-down on the douchebaggery by registering anony?

anononon--if you're at Princeton--can you please apologize (at least on my behalf) that people have spoken so poorly about one of your colleagues. i wish her all the best. her work is important and timely and i really appreciate her scholarship and look forward to seeing her work to come. thanks. Who has spoken poorly of Goffman? At no point anyone questioned her character, intelligence, or value of research. Some have suggested that she got where she was in part because of who she is. But then again, we'd be huge hypocrites if we consistently wrote about networks and cultural capital only to dismiss those as explanations when it comes to sociologists themselves.
