I realize that the search closed on 9/21, but having just heard from a place with a 10/1 deadline (not a sociology program) I wondered if there had been any movement with Stanford. Maybe they're sorting through the 1 trillion applications they received?

Hold tight, it may be a while. Haven't you had some experience with the pace at which academic decisions game made by now? Based on folks I know who were on the market last year, the very earliest you should expect to hear back from anywhere is around a month.

Very few places will say anything in less than 2 weeks. And when they do say anything, its just letting people who havent met some minimum requirements for the position know that they have not even made the long list (if they do the selection like that).
Most universities won't do that, though. And in that case, they will only send rejection letters at the very end of the process, if at all.

Then I guess the place that contacted me must be a real outlier or on some other schedule all of its own (and, it was good news for me-- at least for now ).

Which place? It is the rumor mill, so by all means say more.

American U- Public Affairs. Most of their faculty are political scientists; I'm not sure there are any sociologists there right now.

As I said, a few places will do the notifications for the long lists early on, but those are relatively few and far between, and generally are places where they require more material from those on the long list. Duke, U colorado- colorado springs, and now American U are the only ones Ive heard this year were like that. And since Stanford asked for everything upfront, I guess they wont be doing the same.

They are still reviewing files -- there's not even a long short list yet.

Thank you. I can't find the position description, but when I sent in my materials it was for the "DPAP 2" Assistant Professor search (domestic policy (?) assistant professor)

Ok, not the one I had applied for (I believe it had a 8/24 deadline) but was still in Public Affairs (separate dept though)... GOOD LUCK!

can you share how you were contacted and what you were told (i.e. that you were on a short list, that there were X number of other candidates, whether other candidates have been contacted, etc)?
just wondering if i should give up yet!

no chance this is true. no one who just heard would send the message to the school that they are kind of person who would post something like this. (and i'm not just talking about the gay emoticons) everybody -- stop reading and get back to work.
