If you can afford it, I highly recommend seeing a therapist. The prospect of not knowing IF you will be able to get a job for at least another year, not knowing where you will live, and stresses of the job search are significant. Coping strategies, a space to air concerns, and working through all the issues created from seeking employment can significantly improve mental and physical health.

I'm currently a faculty member and on the market, so I can give advice from both sides of the aisle. For most people, not getting a position this year (or last) isn't about you. It's about the market. You should do whatever you can to stop yourself from freaking out and spend more time making yourself into a better candidate. On the teaching side, this means: accumulating INDEPENDENT teaching experience (not TA'ing), improving student evaluations of your teaching, being observed by a faculty member and having that observation written up in a letter, perhaps even reading up on the literature about teaching (it can improve your teaching philosophy statement and your teaching). On the research side, this means: obviously finishing the Ph.D, submitting articles now for a publication to be listed as forthcoming for next fall, applying for grants (even the small ones help), conference presentations.

Don't know whether to freak out yet, but feeling bitter about seeing certain schools show up on the wiki for phone interviews...and no phone interview. Given how tight the market apparently is this year perhaps I'd better get used to disappointment.

Well, I'm not bitter yet, but I hear you. I'm still on desperate and sad.

Makes me wonder when I can't even get a phone interview.

maybe it's time to take some time away from this board. As a wise friend recently reminded me, no one ever gets *good* news from the rumor mill.
